What is MEDPAC?
MEDPAC represents the interests of all physicians in SC by identifying opportunities to influence decisions that impact the practice of medicine. MEDPAC is the single largest political voice representing South Carolina physicians and the patients they serve. MEDPAC needs your help in electing our friends of medicine to office as we work toward becoming a major player in the South Carolina political arena. Through the support of MEDPAC, the SCMA and its staff gain access to current and future policymakers.

The MEDPAC Board consists of 18 physician members, three from each Congressional District. Additionally, there is one SCMA Alliance representative, one resident and student member. The Board meets several times a year to review and approve campaign contribution requests. Board members often attend campaign fundraisers and deliver MEDPAC contribution checks. The Board is advised by SCMA lobbyists regarding how a legislator votes and how supportive they are of healthcare issues.

MEDPAC works in conjunction with AMPAC, the American Medical Association's Political Action Committee, to represent the interests of physicians and their patients before Congress.

What is a PAC?
Simply, PAC’s can raise and give money to the campaigns of candidates likely to advance a group’s interests. They typically focus on a particular issue or advance a particular cause.

Why Should I Join MEDPAC?
Because you can’t afford not to! Your adversaries understand this. Trial lawyers and insurance company executives understand the importance of political action to their businesses. So should you! The legislative process is ongoing and if medicine’s interests are NOT represented, they will be left out. To be effective, you must “stay in the game” every year. An investment in MEDPAC is an investment for your profession and in your patients’ access to quality medical care.

Remember, the actions you take to involve yourself in politics will translate directly into the actions our lawmakers take in Columbia and Washington, DC.

What does MEDPAC do?
MEDPAC contributes to the campaigns of state office candidates who are “friends of medicine.”

MEDPAC works to promote the SCMA image and brand with policymakers to increase the SCMA’s visibility and heighten its influence at the Statehouse.

MEDPAC empowers physicians to influence legislation that will shape the future of the practice of medicine in SC.
